Degree

Degree

A degree in English grammar refers to the level or intensity of an adjective or adverb. There are three degrees of comparison.

  • Positive Degree: The degree that only refers to adjective and nothing else is called Positive Degree.
  • Example :

  • Lisa is young.
  • Comparative Degree: The degree by which two people are compared is called Comparative degree.
  • There are some ways to recognize a comparative Degree.

  • There will always be an ER after the adjective used in the sentence.
  • Example:

    Smart-Smarter

  • There could be a MORE before the adjective used in the sentence.
  • Example:

    Beautiful - More Beautiful

  • Superlative Degree: The degree by which more than two people or objects are compared is called Superlative Degree .
  • Here are some ways to recognize a Superlative degree:

  • There will be an EST after the adjective used in the sentence.
  • Example:

    Smart-Smarter-Smartest

  • There could be a MOST before the adjective used in the sentence.
  • Example:

    Beautiful-More Beautiful-MOST Beautiful

    Superlative To Positive

Here are some ways in which we can transform a sentence that's in Superlative degree into a Positive Degree.

    Rule 1:

No other + adjective with the extension + verb + as + Positive form of the Superlative degree + subject

    Example:

Superlative: She is the smartest girl in the class.

Positive : No other girl in the class is as smart as her.

    Rule 2:

If the sentence has an ONE OF THE in it then we have to VERY FEW in the start of the sentence then we have to add the previous pronoun and plural verb.

    Example:

Superlative: He is one of the best boys in the class.

Positive : Very few boys in the class are as good as he.

    Superlative To Comparative

Now we will see some rules to transform a Superlative sentence into a comparative sentence.

    Rule 3:

At first we have to change the degree of the adjective to comparative then add THAN ANY OTHER after the comparative adjective.

    Example

Superlative: She is the smartest girl in the class.

Positive : She is smarter than any other girl in the class.

    Rule 4:

If there is an ONE OF THE in the sentence the we have to use THAN MOST OTHER and if there is an OF ALL in the sentence then we have to use THAN ALL OTHER and the rest of the sentence will be same.

    Example:

Superlative: He is one of the greatest person in the world.

Positive : He is greater than most other persons in the world.

Note: vice versa of these rules are applicable.
