Right form of Verb
The verbs are the most variable element of the sentences. The right form of verb encompasses most of the grammatical rules of English language. Every element of a sentence eventually relates to the verb. The verbs appear differently in a sentence on the basis of their subjects (subject-verb agreement), tenses, moods, voices, different structures, modals, etc.
Note: Participles (without auxiliaries), infinitives, and gerunds do not work as the verb in a sentence. Gerunds work as nouns, but participles and infinitives work as adjectives/adverbs.
Rule 1:
If the subject is singular then we have to use singular verb and If the subject is plural then we have to use plural verb.
Example:
Rule 2:
If the sentence has an ALONG WITH,TOGETHER WITH,AS WELL AS and ACCOMPANIED BY then we have to use the verb as first sub mentioned in the sentence. But if there in a NEITHER....NOR and EITHER....OR in the sentence,we have have to use the verb as the second subject mentioned in the sentence.
Example:
Rule 3:
We always have to use V1+ing after preposition. But If there is TO in the sentence then we have to use V1. Again if the sentence has an WITH A VIEW TO,LOOK FORWARD,CONFESS TO,SUGGEST TO,CAN NOT HELP,COULD NOT HELP,WOULD YOU MIND and WHILE then we have to ING with the verb(V + ing)
Example:
Rule 4:
We have to use V1 after Model auxiliary. But if there is a HAVE or BE after model auxiliary then we have to use V3.
Example:
Rule 5:
If the sentence has a JUST,JUST NOW,ALREADY, EVER,NEVER,SO FAR,RECENTLY then we have to use Present perfect form. But if the sentence has an AT THIS MOMENT,AT THIS TIME,NOWADAYS,DAY BY DAY,NOW then we have to use Present continuous.
Example:
Rule 6:
If the sentence has an YESTERDAY, THE PREVIOUS DAY,AGO,ONCE,LAST, THE DAY BEFORE and YESTERDAY the we have to use Past Indefinite tense. But If the sentence has a TOMORROW, THE NEXT DAY, FURTHER, LATER, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW the we have to use Future Indefinite Tense.
Example:
Rule 7:
If the sentence has an EACH, EVERY and ONE OF THE then we have to use singular verb in spite of the noun being in plural form. This rule is applicable in the terms of measurements too.
Example:
Rule 8:
If the sentence has an AFTER then we have to use Past Perfect Tense after the word. But If the sentence has a BEFORE then we have to use Past Perfect Tense before the word and the rest of the sentence will be in Past Indefinite Tense.
Example:
Rule 9:
A Simple Sentence will have only one Finite Verb. If there are two, one must be non-finite.
Finite verb: The verb that fully expresses the speaker's speech is called Finite verb.
How to recognize finite verb:
(i) Verb will be in present form
(ii) Verb will be in past perfect
(iii) Verb + s/es
Non-finite Verb: The verb that the speaker's speech is not fully expressed but the listener wants to know more is called non-finite verb.
How to recognize Non-finite Verb:
(i) Verb + ing ( without Auxiliary )
(ii) Verb will be in past participle ( without Auxiliary)
(iii) To + verb will be in present form .
Rule 10:
After Auxiliary verb we can use V+ING as well as V3.
Example:
Before we get to the second example please remember that V3 can be only used after Auxiliary verb if the Subject can not do the work or the verb on its own. For clarification,a car cannot import itself. Someone has to do it or it has to be IMPORTED by someone.
Rule 11:
Structure 1: NO SOONER HAD+V3+Extension+Than+V3.
Structure 2:SCARCELY HAD+V3+Extension+when+V2.
